Colour Combo
The Theme and Colour Scheme go hand in hand. Shiny, luminous colours are out. Pastels, blues, whites and cool shades of green are in.
The Wedding Invite
Cards in the shape of slippers, shells, starfish or cards with shells and sand pasted on can be creative. Massage in bottle can be lovely surprises for your guests, but giving glass bottles can prove hazardous, and in choosing plastic bottles you may need to look for the right shape as well as high quality products.
Lights and Fire
Candles and Lanterns can be used creatively on your tables as centerpieces. But remember to keep the candles in glass containers as the sea breeze may put them out. Hang the lamps from temporary props or beams of the building. If the wedding is a night wedding, candles or flaming torches lit along the sand can give a very warm and romantic tropical
island feeling. Do remember to place the torches away form flammable material including areas where people would gather, as sarees and synthetif material are easily flammable.
Flowers and Décor
A wedding needs flowers, even when on the beach. Natural flowers are what we recommend but avoid flowers that would wilt easily. Use colourful flowers on the poruwa to enhance its look and make it stand out on the beach. You can use large shells as centerpieces that can double as weights to hold down the tablecloth on the tables laid out on the beach. As for the décor you can choose shells, stones, pebbles, floating candles, sand sculptures and anything from the natural surrounding that would blend in. For the daring, you can use beach umbrellas in your décor, these may actually come in use if the ceremony is held on a hot afternoon. Even more daring is having surf boards and boogie boards included in your wedding décor.
Music
Lively music such as reggae and blues are great for celebrating a beach wedding. Also acoustic music fits in well, maybe Latin or Spanish types or even baila. Have a band playing the guitar and singing romantic songs wearing wicker hats on and wearing flowery cotton shirts. A DJ set on the beach can have the youngsters having a great time partying away.
The Food
Something sweet and sour, something chilie and something with a nice sauce: seafood such as shrimps, crabs, squid, fish either grilles or cooked in anyway are the star dishes for a beach wedding. Barbecues too are a good way to treat your guests. In making it a more memorable occasion you can offer oysters, if your budget supports it. Tuna sandwiches, Vietnamese spring rolls, vegetables on skewers, fruit salads are other favourites. And as we are in Sri Lanka, don't forget rice dishes as well as noodles. You can mix them with any of the above.
You can be creative with tropical fruit offerings. If on a hot summery afternoon or early evening, offer ice cream, popsicles, frozen fruit, sorbets to help your guests cool down. Your caterer/ hotel should be able to suggest to you a great menu. And you can use wicker baskets, banana leaves and bamboo shoots in serving the food.
